American Roulette vs. European Roulette

European and American Roulette are both extremely popular. The main difference between the American roulette and the European roulette is the number of zeros or green pockets.  This means that the American Roulette Wheel has 38 numbers, instead of 37 in European Roulette. The double zero gives the option to make an additional bet called Top Line that is paid at 6 to 1. The Top Line bet is on the first five numbers 0, 00, 1, 2 and 3. French roulette is a bit different than the other roulette variations we’ve already discussed, because it features a unique table layout. Like European roulette, it has 37 pockets, where numbers from 1 to 36 and 0 can be found. Note that the table layout is unique and the writing is in French.

French roulette uses different terminology to refer to even/odd (pair/impair) and 1 to18/19 to 36 (manque/passe). The numbers make up the inside betting zones, and the sections below and to the right contain outside bets such as red or black, dozens and columns. On some tables, the outside bets will be displayed using French roulette terms such as “12p” for premier douzaine (1st dozen), “pair” for even and “impair” for odd.

There are two types of bet in Roulette. The inside bets have higher payouts but longer odds. The outside bets, which are easier to win as they include more numbers, have lower payouts.

The biggest difference between American/European and French roulette is the latter’s inclusion of en prison or la partage rules. These both change the way outside bets are resolved when a zero comes in. If the ball stops at zero even money bets don’t automatically lose but stay on the field “En Prison” till the next round. If the next round the ball lands on zero again stakes lose. But if your stake “En Prison” wins you get your original money back. Another rule “La Partage” (the divide in English) saves a half of even money stake to the player, if the ball lands to zero. Both of these rules are specific to ‘even money’ bets.

Many players favor French roulette because it provides with numerous betting options. Generally speaking, the types of bets in French roulette can be divided into three main categories – inside, outside and call (also known as racetrack) bets.

For some bets, the French Roulette cuts the house edge to as little as 1.35% ( thanks to a couple of quirky rule changes), which significantly improves your chances of winning compared to the 5.26% edge in the American version of the game.
