Introduction

Over the past few years Microgaming have decided to take a slightly different approach when it comes to game development. Instead of using their own team to build games – like they used to with the likes of Immortal Romance and Thunderkick II – today, they work with a number of small game studios, paying them to build slots instead. These games are then pushed out on Microgaming’s Quickfire gaming platform under Microgaming’s branding – and Stellar Portals is the latest example of this new development strategy.

Format And Top Prize

Stellar Portals is actually developed by a relatively unknown studio called Snowborn Games. The game gives off a vibe very similar to that of NetEnt’s Starburst – and you’ll see the neon-like reels and symbols making up the majority of the gameplay with some modern sounds and animations accompanying every spin. The slot itself is built around a 5-reel, 3-row format and there’s a total of 20 fixed paylines; the number of paylines cannot be adjusted. You’ll find yourself able to play Stellar Portals from as little as .20 coins per spin, although the maximum spin is capped at 20 coins, so it’s quite a lot lower than you may expect to see in a video slot today.

In this Stellar Portals review we’re going to be taking an in-depth, impartial and unbiased look at what the game has to offer – and with a maximum win-potential of 7,777X your stake to be won on every spin it’s worth sticking around!

Stellar Portals’ Symbols And Payouts

The first thing we want to draw your attention to, when it comes to symbols and payouts, is the game’s RTP – the return to player. Microgaming’s games are, generally speaking, pretty good when it comes to RTPs, and Stellar Portals has a fixed RTP of 96.04%. The “fixed” part of it means that online casinos can’t choose a different RTP setting so wherever you play the game you’ll know you’re playing the highest RTP setting possible.

The symbols on the reels are relatively unconventional, and you won’t find any playing card symbol values like with most slots today. All icons are neon lights, and the lower-paying symbols include Green, Yellow, Blue and Red Orbs, all of which are well-lit and look fantastic on the black backdrop the slot offers. The game’s higher-paying symbols are different Portals, and these pay quite well, so you’ll be wanting to form 5-of-a-kind combos if you’re interested in walking away with the really big payouts.

There’s also a wide variety of scatter symbols – or bonus symbols as they’re known in the game – and these scatter symbols are the key to triggering the bonuses and features. We’ll be talking about these in the following section of this Stellar Portals review.

Stellar Portals Bonus Features

You’ll find four different bonus symbols on the reels in Stellar Portals and each of these symbols activates a different free-spins option. In order to trigger the free-spins feature you need to land three or more of the scatter symbols anywhere in view, and below, we’ll take a look at what these different bonuses include:

Multiplier Bonus: If you manage to land three of the Multiplier Bonus scatter symbols anywhere in view you’ll be awarded between 6 and 9 free-spins. During the free-spins, all wins have a 5X multiplier attached to them, although Snowborn Games have visualized this strangely, calling it a “5X stake increase” as opposed to a multiplier. However, in reality, they’re the same thing.

Rising Multiplier Bonus: Landing three or more of the Rising Multiplier Bonus scatter symbols anywhere in view will trigger the Rising Multiplier Bonus. You will then receive 6 free-spins, during which there’s a progressive multiplier in play. Each time a win is formed, the multiplier will increase by 1X, up to a maximum of 10X.

Stacked Wild Bonus: If you land three or more of the Stacked Wild Bonus scatter symbols anywhere in view you’ll trigger the Stacked Wild Bonus. You will then receive between 6 and 9 free-spins (depending on how many bonus symbols you landed during the base-game) and new stacked wilds are added to the reels during this bonus. This means, theoretically, it’s possible to land a full screen of wilds – though don’t expect it to happen particularly often!

Sticky Wild Bonus: The Sticky Wild Bonus is Stellar Portals’ most lucrative bonus round and it’s triggered by landing three or more of the Sticky Wild Bonus scatter symbols anywhere in view. You will then receive 6 spins, and during the bonus all wilds are “sticky”. This means that landing a sticky wild in place will “lock” it in view for the duration of the bonus – and while it’s not possible to re-trigger the feature (meaning you will only ever be able to get 6 free-spins) there’s some solid win-potential here and it’s where the biggest wins can be formed while playing the slot!

Our Verdict Of Stellar Portals

While Snowborn Games may not be one of the “big name” game developers around today, their partnership with Microgaming is sure to get Stellar Portals the recognition it deserves. While it’s not the most groundbreaking slot we’ve ever reviewed, it does do a good job of offering players something different – and those who like regular, constant bonuses (despite many of them not paying much) will likely find themselves warming to the game quite quickly.

Despite the high variance nature of Stellar Portals it seems to play quite well – and while the base-game is quite dry, the regular features do mean you don’t have to wait around for long to hit those big wins, so if you’re looking for something a bit different to try out, Stellar Potals is well-worth considering.
