Unfortunately, this Playson slot machine doesn’t draw out Honer’s epic narrative with any special bonus games other than the usual free spins and gamble game.
The Legend Begins
Odysseus was the legendary King of Ithaca who had a leading in role in Homer’s epic poem, the Odyssey, which describes the hero’s journey home after fighting in the Trojan War. Along the way, our hero will face storms, be captured by a cyclops, encounter some cannibals, visit a witch-goddess, and face some more storms. All in all, it took Odysseus 10 years to get home, which is one hell of a commute.
While this slot machine does present many Greek style artefacts and a few character symbols to relate to the theme, it doesn’t really do any justice to the original story of the epic Odyssey.
There is a Trojan Horse icon, and an image of Odysseus himself as well as his ship, a soldier, and a statue of a goddess. But other than that there are just some simple Greek vases, a reef of leaves, a helmet, a shield, a coin, and a lyre. These items are all shown in great detail, but you can’t help but feel that the game designers could have included some more characters from the narrative to draw out the action. And just to make things even more underwhelming, the game features a very tame and quite incongruous musical track which sounds more like something from a slapstick comedy sketch than a mythical Greek slot epic.
Bonus Gameplay
There also aren’t any particularly interesting bonus features involved in this Odysseus game other than the generic and expected gameplay elements of an online video slot machine. So, that means that there is a wild icon – the ship symbol – which will fill in winning sequences by replacing all normal game symbols. The only other special symbol which won’t be substituted by the wild ship is the scatter icon – the goddess statue – which will award some free spins whenever three or more appear in any position. Admittedly, there are a lot of free spins up for grabs since five scatter symbols will trigger a whopping 100 free goes.
Heroes Reward
With up to 30 paylines to play with, there is always a decent chance that players will line up a winning combination of symbols. When that happens, the value of the stake placed on the winning line will be multiplied by the values that appear in the game’s “paytable” menu. The biggest of which is a 500x line bet multiplier which is offered when five Odysseus character icons fall in a row. That may seem like quite a low value for a top payout, but keep in mind that this is game provides more ways to win than other slot machines. Plus, the five-in-a-row payouts decrease at quite a steady rate, offering decent wins across the board, even for the more commonly appearing icons. For example, the Trojan Horse pays up to 400x, while the soldier and shield both offer up to 350x. The helmet and lyre will pay 250x for five-of-a-kind and the vase and coin both reward 200x. The least valuable icon of all still pays out a decent line bet multiplier of 150x.
The different stakes available to pick are 1, 2, 5, 6, 8 and 20, which makes for a maximum total bet of 600 credits if all paylines are active with a 20 credit line bet. Alternatively, casual spinners can play it safe and easy with a single payline and a single credit wager.
Greek Gamble
No matter how risky you like to play the main game, there is always a clear cut gamble available whilst playing Odysseus. That is because every winning spin gives players to option to double or quadruple their money with a simple gamble game. Either guess the colour of a turned over playing card to double your win from the qualify spin, or guess the card’s suit to quadruple it.
An Unadventurous Adventure Slot
This slot machine promises epic adventure with its mythical Greek theme. However, in reality the game is somewhat underwhelming with a lazy set of game symbols and a lack of any big bonus elements.
